Here are some questions to think about the text:
Jesus comes to Nazareth in the power of the Spirit. Earlier in chapter 4, Jesus was full of the Spirit after his baptism (4:1) and then the Spirit leads him into the desert to be tempted by the devil in the desert. What does this all say about the Holy Spirit? Has there ever been a time you felt led by the Spirit? What did that feel like?
The book of Acts is written by the same author of Luke. The second chapter of Acts is about the time of Pentecost when the Spirit comes to the nascent church and leads the disciples of Jesus from Jerusalem to the ends of the known world. What role does the Spirit play in your life? What about in your faith community?
When Jesus talks about preaching good news to the poor, does Jesus mean literal poor or spiritual poor? What difference would it make either way?
Jesus uses the text from Isaiah to say that he is God’s anointed. If you heard Jesus saying that he was the anointed one, the Messiah, how would you feel? Would you believe him?
