Tuesday Morning: Seeing Jesus After Easter

In the Revised Common Lectionary, just as there are listings of passages for each Sunday, there is a list of scriptures for Easter Evening. I don’t know many churches that have Easter services in the evening, but these passages remain. One of those passage is from the 24th chapter of Luke, the story of the Road to Emmaus.

Luke tells us that two disciples are walking from Jerusalem to a nearby village called Emmaus. They are in deep conversation about what had happened over the last few days including the astounding news of this morning. Jesus walks up to them and joins them in the discussion. They are kept from seeing Jesus. They tells Jesus about the report of women who found the grave empty. Jesus explains what is going on all the while keeping his identity concealed. They all make it to Emmaus and the invite Jesus to stay with them. It is when Jesus breaks the bread that they realize they were in the presence of the Risen Jesus!

Earlier this year, Rob Hamilton proposed that we keep a diary where we log where we have seen God in our daily life. I’ve done it (not perfectly) and it has been interesting. When you are thinking about where you might see God, you are reminded that God isn’t just a “concept.” When we look for God, we become expectant of God.

Rob urged people to follow this practice and I am going to remind you. Consider doing this now, especially in this Season of Easter. We say Christ is Risen, let’s be expectant to seeing where the Risen Christ is alive.

Christ is Risen! Let’s be on the look out for where God shows up in our lives.
